JobsSummer 2027 · class of 2030

Summer 2027,
hunted a year early.

The top quant firms do not hire freshmen for paid summer seats. They run freshman discovery programs instead — and those are the pipeline into the $5-6k/week sophomore and junior internships. So: take every freshman-built door, fire the no-class-floor long shots because they cost nothing, and keep a Berkeley research floor underneath all of it. 108 programs swept Aug 8, 2026; the eight flagship claims verified on the firms’ own pages.

Quant & finance — built for freshmen

Doors designed for a 2026-27 first-year. Most are short immersion or discovery programs rather than salaried summers — but they are the pipeline into the sophomore and junior seats that pay $5,800 a week. Red chips mark eligibility restrictions; apply only where the criteria honestly fit.

SULI at LBNLUS Dept. of EnergyCitizenship-gated

Ten weeks of national-lab research ten minutes uphill from campus, and freshmen do qualify by coursework once one semester and six science credit hours are done — but SULI requires US citizenship or lawful permanent residency, which rules out an F-1 student outright. On the page purely so it does not eat an evening in January.

The F-1 lens

Every listing above, filtered through visa reality. The load-bearing rules:

  • On-campus jobs need no authorization at all. Up to 20 hours a week across all jobs in Fall/Spring, more in summer; no BIO form, no USCIS. Work-study is irrelevant — no F-1 student qualifies, and most Berkeley postings are open to everyone. Full map: F-1 Work Map.
  • CPT is closed for your majors. BIO suspended Course Credit CPT on Aug 12 after an ICE memo; a second ICE memo on Aug 24 says CPT tied to an optional course fails the “integral” test outright. Degree-requirement CPT still processes, but BIO’s list has exactly one bachelor’s on it (Educational Sciences) — no Data Science, CS, EECS, Econ, Stats or Haas undergrad. Stop planning around CPT.
  • Paid off-campus summer work now runs through pre-completion OPT. Available after one academic year (May 14, 2027); file the I-765 from ~Feb 13, 2027 ($470 + $1,780 premium for a June start); no employer needed on the application; no extension-of-stay filing. A 10-week full-time summer costs ~70 days of the 12-month OPT bank — a price worth paying for a real internship. Ask each recruiter early whether they accept pre-completion OPT; it is legally the same EAD, but some only know CPT.
  • Unpaid discovery events and insight programs need no work authorisation at all. FTTP, Bridge, Discover Citadel, the Trading Invitational, Inside HRT, SIG Discovery, GS Possibilities and MS Early Insights are all visa-clean — which is now the strongest argument for loading up on them this year.
  • “US work authorization required, no sponsorship” (Claude Corps) and citizenship-required (SULI) are hard blocks, flagged red above. LBNL and UCSF URAP positions are also closed to international students while CPT is on hold.
  • Remote paid platforms are not a loophole. Work performed while physically in the US is US employment regardless of who pays — WorldQuant BRAIN payouts included. Writing alphas for the ranking is unambiguously fine; taking payouts before you hold an EAD is not.
  • “No H-1B sponsorship” on a posting (Roblox) constrains full-time conversion later, not the summer itself.

Closed doors — and when they reopen

Verified dead ends for a class-of-2030 freshman this cycle. Each one names its unlock date, because several become the main targets of fall 2027 — this list is a calendar, not a graveyard.

Palantir
every intern track (SWE, FDSE, Product Design, Path, Launch) is gated by graduation windows that exclude 2030. Multiple 2027 reqs are live for eligible years. Revisit the junior-year cycle, fall 2028.
Hudson River Trading
summer 2027 internships are “for 2028 grads” only. The Sophomore Internship — $5,800/week plus company-paid housing and meals, rotating Algo Dev and SWE — is the summer 2028 shot: apply fall 2027. Inside HRT now is the on-ramp. WiTT winter internship: second-years, restricted.
Optiver
summer 2027 posted at $70,000–88,000 for the internship period plus flights — penultimate-year only, open now for eligible years. Revisit fall 2028.
IMC Trading
summer internship and the US Launchpad program both class-gated. Revisit sophomore year.
DRW
2027 internships need Dec 2026–Jun 2027 graduation ($96.13/hr SWE + $25k signing + $15k completion). Discover DRW, the underclassman front door, required Dec 2027–Jun 2028 graduation last cycle — so your edition is early 2028: apply ~fall 2027, feeding summer 2029.
Five Rings
summer internships pay $300,000 annualized and interview from September, but are class-gated. LINK, the 5-day paid software intensive ($2,000 stipend + travel + housing), closed mid-June for its August run — check class-year wording winter 2027.
Point72 Academy
2027 Investment Analyst summer internship is open now at $120,000–140,000 annualized for eight weeks — penultimate-year. Revisit 2028–29.
PDT Partners
summer 2027 SWE intern at $180,000 annualized base, ten weeks NYC, rolling — penultimate-skewed. Later cycles.
Bridgewater Investment Associate
the 2027 cycle ran Dec 1, 2025–Jan 31, 2026 and is closed. The summer 2028 cycle opens ~Dec 2026 — calendared below, because that one you can actually enter as a sophomore.
Millennium · Balyasny · AQR · Man · Schonfeld
all main internships sit in penultimate-year windows; AQR opened its 2027 tracks Jun 30, 2026 and Schonfeld’s express-interest is live. Meet Millennium in February is the only early hook.
Meta University
discontinued. Meta announced closure and the final cohort is already admitted — no summer 2027 edition exists. Do not go looking.
Anthropic · Cursor
neither runs a conventional internship. Anthropic’s careers page states it does not currently offer them — Fellows and Claude Corps are the only routes (see 4.0). Cursor has no internship at all; Campus Leads is an ambassador role.
Bessemer Fellows
“pausing in its current form” and being reimagined — no cycle to apply to. Watch for a relaunch.
D. E. Shaw named fellowships
Nexus, Momentum, Ascend, Latitude and Discovery: the fellowships site now redirects and lists none. Historically second-year students, several demographically restricted. Watch campus.deshaw.com around October, plan around nothing.
Bank sophomore programs
GS Emerging Leaders, Blackstone Future Women Leaders and Diverse Leaders, Evercore’s sophomore seminar, Lazard Early Insights, Jefferies symposiums, BlackRock forums — all sophomore-cycle, several demographically restricted, most applying Sep–Feb of sophomore year. Your window is fall 2027.
BlackRock Founders Scholarship
$20,000 on top of a paid summer internship — but it rides the 2027 Summer Analyst cycle, which needs Sep 2027–Jul 2028 graduation. Sophomore/junior-year item.
Jane Street WiSE · AMP
WiSE targets women and gender-expansive students “about to start their first year” — both the timing and the restriction rule it out. AMP is for graduating high-school seniors before matriculation.
Citadel Summer Externship
invite-only through Thrive Scholars for rising sophomores and juniors — no open application path exists for a college student outside that program.
SIG summer internships
require graduating before Aug 2028. The Discovery events in section 1.0 are the freshman entry point instead.
Citadel NXT
not a student program at all — it is the full-time Quantitative Developer track. Ignore the recruiting-blog noise suggesting otherwise.
Amazon Future Engineer
$40,000 scholarship plus a guaranteed internship, but you apply in high-school senior year. Window passed.
Salesforce Futureforce Tech Launchpad
ten-week pre-internship with CodePath; the 2026 deadline was Feb 22, 2026 and the 2027 cohort is unposted. Check ~Feb 2027, sophomore-friendly.
Databricks · Figma · Ramp · Vercel · Perplexity · Mercor
all pay well ($51–70/hr band) and post fall 2026, but each carries either a graduation window excluding 2030 or a de-facto upperclass intake. Worth a single application each once postings drop, expecting nothing.

The calendar

Rows in full ink carry a hard date or a short window. Everything else is rolling — and rolling means early wins: at every firm on this page, applying in week one of a posting beats applying in week four with a better resume.

Aug 9
DeadlinePear Fellows closes. VC-apprenticeship track only — skip unless that path genuinely appeals; the resume plus two-minute Loom plus seed-round memo is a real evening of work.
Aug 21
NowWhere this actually stands. You are mid-GBO with five days to instruction, so the realistic window for the live board below is this weekend and the Aug 25–27 career-prep sessions. Nothing on the quant list has moved its deadline; the change since Aug 8 is that Berkeley’s own pipeline opened — Cal Job Shadow, BCE first-year programming, and the Discovery Opportunities Platform for research and internships.
Aug 8–20
LiveFire the live board. Microsoft Explore (first-year app), D. E. Shaw, Jump, Tower, Group One, Roblox, Google general SWE, Amazon SDE, Scale AI Builder. Sign the Jane Street notify forms (FTTP, Bridge), join the HRT Campus Talent Community, open a WorldQuant BRAIN account. Watch stripe.com/jobs/university — postings historically drop right about now.
Aug 21
OpensURAP applications open — today. Browse projects the day they post, apply in the first days, target BAIR-adjacent faculty. Closes around the first week of September — the single most time-sensitive research move of the fall.
September
Watch weekly: the Two Sigma First-Year SWE req (apply within two weeks of it going live), Google STEP/ASDI, Uber STAR re-check, OpenAI postings beginning. Stripe seats start filling. Belvedere summer reqs go up. Claude Corps cohort 3 reopens — noted only so it can be skipped on visa grounds.
October
WindowNVIDIA Ignite, ~2-week window. SIG US Discovery events post. D. E. Shaw fellowships historically appear. Bloomberg, Netflix and Apple reqs peak. Jane Street FTTP interview slots historically fill by late October — be early, not thorough.
Oct 26
DeadlineCal Job Shadow registration closes (My Berkeley) for the Jan 4–15 externship. Same day Spring 2027 enrolment opens — which means the Cal 1 Card registration hold has to be cleared before then, or none of this matters.
Nov–Dec
Citadel Discover and the Trading Invitational cycles post (~Dec–Feb). Kleiner Perkins Fellows opens ~Dec. GS Possibilities watch begins. Bridgewater’s summer-2028 Investment Associate cycle opens ~Dec 1. D. E. Shaw’s own guidance: applications in by the end of 2026.
January
StackKleiner Perkins ~Jan 31 · 8VC ~late Jan · Inside HRT apps open · Uber STAR ~Jan · Bridgewater IA Jan 31 (for summer 2028). SULI would close here too — skip it, citizenship-gated. Watch the Citadel Discover reposting for the rolled-forward graduation window.
February
PriorityCitadel Discover priority deadline, ~early Feb. Trading Invitational ~Feb–early Mar. Meet Millennium runs its whole February window (feeds summer 2028). WorldQuant IQC 2027 registration expected. GS Possibilities historically opened Feb 1.
March
Neo Scholars ~Mar · SURF ~mid-Mar · Inside HRT deadline ~late Mar · MATS spring applications. Morgan Stanley Early Insights tracks run Jan–Mar. By now the summer should be decided — if it is not, the Berkeley floor in section 5.0 is the answer, not a fallback.
Apr–May
CPTOffer → CPT paperwork immediately. Any paid off-campus role needs BIO authorisation before day one; the offer letter starts the clock. Inside HRT and Discover-style events cluster April–May.
Fall 2027
Next warThe sophomore wall opens: HRT Sophomore Internship (summer 2028, $5,800/week), Discover DRW, D. E. Shaw fellowships, Citadel sophomore programming, and every bank sophomore diversity and insight program. Everything on this page is preparation for that window.
